What is Thai QR (PromptPay)?
Why you cannot survive in Thailand without it?

If you walk into a cafe in Bangkok, buy a fresh mango at a street market, or take a taxi, you will see a small blue QR code on the counter. This is PromptPay, commonly known as Thai QR. It is the lifeblood of Thailand's financial system, and it is practically impossible to travel or live here comfortably without it.
While Thailand is heavily cashless, it did not adopt credit card terminals like Europe or the US. Instead, the country skipped a generation of technology and went straight to QR codes. Every single local merchant, from high end restaurants to beach vendors, prefers Thai QR over cash or plastic cards.
For a long time, this was a massive headache for tourists and digital nomads. To scan a Thai QR code, you traditionally needed a local Thai bank account. But opening one on a tourist or nomad visa involves long lines, endless paperwork, and often a flat rejection from the bank.
This is where One Wallet changes things. It bridges the gap by allowing foreigners to access the local Thai QR network instantly. You simply top up your One Wallet balance using your international Visa or Mastercard, or via a One QR bank scan. Once your balance is funded, you can open the app and scan absolutely any local merchant's QR code to pay instantly.
By using a digital wallet like One Wallet, you get the purchasing power of a local Thai bank account right on your phone, without ever having to set foot inside a physical bank.
